Sail for Cystic Fibrosis Regatta

Report on the 2018 Sail for Cystic Fibrosis Regatta

Well, our 9th Annual Sail for Cystic Fibrosis Regatta is in the history books and Ally and I again want to extend our “Thank you” to all who attended and supported this awesome event!
All the donations are not in yet and that will take a couple more weeks to clean up, but at the time of this report we are at
$5,300.00! Which brings our total raised to $51,400.00 in 9 years! This is awesome! These funds go directly to research funded by Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the strides they have made in the last 30 years are amazing! The average life span for a child diagnosed in the mid 80’s was approximately 12. Now it has risen to the early 50’s! Just for a comparison purposes the average life span for someone with CF in the USA is 40.6 years.
We would like to say
Thank You to all of our generous sponsors for the prizes on the raffle tables. The list of sponsors is below so please have a look and support these sponsors. Without their generosity we could not have raised this kind of money! We had some absolutely amazing prizes this year (as we seem to have every year!) and even with attendance down for this event, we still sold a load of raffle tickets!
Also, to the Commodore and Executive of the Club, for their tremendous support of this event goes a big
THANK YOU!
Now the details of the Regatta . . .
The day started out with a dire forecast for weather. Now in the past 8 years we have always lucked out and had a beautiful clear day! Not so much this time. Foul weather gear was the order of the day – at least at the start!
We had 3 boats compete in the Spinnaker Class and 7 boats compete in the JOG class. The good part of the day is we had enough wind to make for some great sailing! The winds where a steady 10 – 14 Knots from the ESE to E for most of the race.
The Spinnaker boats went out to E9 which is about 11.5 NM SE of the Club, very close to the Pelee Passage Light. Using an Australian Pursuit start
Bear’s Mistress left first then Bambarra and finally 10 Forward. When we rounded E9 there was still 11 minutes between Bear’s Mistress and 10 Forward (who spotted us 25 minutes & 25 seconds due to the rating differential) but they were making up time fast. Our spinnaker went up and the fun began! A screaming reach down the rhumline to the finish line and most of the way was 7 – 7.5 knots with some 8’s and mid-8 knot speeds. 10 Forward was bearing down on Bear’s Mistress all the way and we were expecting them to pass at some point but at the finish Bear’s Mistress was still 15 – 20 seconds ahead of them for the win! My crew, Larry Domm, Lisa Presley and Joe Davidson all had big grins on their faces when the “Winnebago” beat the race boat(s)! But it was so close we could hear the bow wave on 10 Forward right behind us!
The JOG boats had a beat to the Leamington Rock Pile – 7.8 NM East of the start and a downwind ride back in the brisk breeze!
String Therapy held out for the win. This is Walter Cooper’s new boat, a Kirby 25 and kind of a first for Mr. Cooper to be sailing/racing his own boat! Way to go Walter! To beat the CS 30’s in that breeze says a lot about your new boat and your driving must have been pretty good too!
Two CS 30’s rounded out the winners with
Vela ripping in for the 2nd place and Left Wing bringing up a close 3rd. All boats saw some decent speeds on the way back and likely some challenging steering conditions with some rolling wave action!
So despite the less than ideal weather (other than the breeze) all the boats who raced had fun and enough breeze to get back to the club early enough to relax for the rest of the afternoon.
